Game notes: The Black Bears have been turnover-prone to the tune of 23 per game and, in last season’s loss to the Pioneers, Sacred Heart scored 29 points off Maine’s 21 turnovers. The Pioneers are averaging nine steals per game through their first two games so the Black Bears have to do a better job protecting the basketball. Maine must also do a better job on the boards. The Black Bears have been outrebounded by 10 per game while Sacred Heart has averaged seven more rebounds than its opponents. Maine coach Richard Barron will continue to search for productive combinations and looking for a better shooting performance as Maine is shooting just 38.7 percent from the floor, 22.7 percent from beyond the 3-point arc and 63.2 percent from the foul line. Junior guard Lauren Bodine had a game-high 24 points vs. the Pioneers but hasn’t gotten off the mark this season, averaging just two points in 8.3 minutes per game. Her resurgence could help jumpstart the Black Bears.
