GOULDSBORO, Maine — Maine State Police say a Gouldsboro couple was found dead Thursday morning in what appears to have been a murder-suicide.

Virginia Hutchins, 75, and her husband, 65-year-old Raymond Hutchins, were found dead on the couch in their Grand Marsh Bay home by a relative who went to check on them, according to Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland.

Detectives said it appears Raymond Hutchins shot his wife and then himself. According to McCausland, Virginia Hutchins had been in poor health, and her husband was her full-time caregiver.

A handgun was recovered at the home.

The bodies will be examined by the state medical examiner’s office on Friday or Saturday.

No further information was available Thursday night.
