HARPSWELL, Maine — A Brunswick man was killed Saturday night after he lost control of his vehicle and crashed into an SUV at an intersection on Harpswell Islands Road.

Police identified Eric Allred, 28, as the deceased driver in a Sunday afternoon news release.

Lt. Donald Foss of the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office said Allred was traveling north on Harpswell Island Road shortly after 7 p.m. when his 1998 Subaru Legacy crossed the center line and slammed into an SUV driven by Lauren Caswell, 39, of Northfield, Vermont. Caswell’s SUV was in the southbound lane on Harpswell Island Road, but had slowed down preparing to turn right onto Garrison Cove Road, according to Foss.

Emergency crews had to extricate Allred from the Subaru due to the extent of the damage to the vehicle. He was pronounced dead by Harpswell rescue personnel en route to Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick.

Caswell and her passengers, including her husband and two sons, ages 6 and 2, suffered minor “bumps and bruises,” police said. Both children were secured in safety seats, according to Foss.

“Alcohol is not believed to be a factor, but speed was,” Foss said in the news release, adding that the investigation into the crash is ongoing.
