ROCKLAND, Maine — The city manager search committee spent much of Monday interviewing five candidates for the job. And by early evening, the committee had narrowed the search to four.
Councilor William Clayton, who chairs the search committee, said Monday that the second round of interviews will be held next Tuesday and Wednesday evenings.
The four finalists are all from Maine, he said. The candidates each have some municipal government experience but not all are currently municipal managers, Clayton said. The finalists include both men and women.
The council was scheduled to interview a sixth candidate Monday, but the person withdrew on that day for reasons not given, he said.
Finance Director Tom Luttrell has been serving as interim city manager since James Smith resigned in December 2013. Luttrell has declined to say whether he has applied for the post.
The consultant hired by the city to help in the search — Rick Dacri of Dacri & Associates of Kennebunkport — submitted the names of the six candidates to the search committee.
The search committee consists of the five city councilors and former councilor Eric Hebert, whose term expired last month.
Clayton said that after the second round of interviews, the council will take time before it winnows the field further. He added that there is a possibility two finalists will be presented to the public before a selection is made.
More than 100 people submitted applications for the job.
