BANGOR, Maine — The former Howland police chief has been convicted of molesting two young girls. As part of a plea deal, Carl Smith, 73 will serve four years of a 17-year sentence. Smith was taking care of the twin 5-year-old girls while their parents were away. The assault took place in April.

Smith pleaded guilty to two counts of unlawful sexual contact. In exchange, more serious charges against him were dropped. Smith retired as Howland’s police chief in 1988.
