WESLEY, Maine — Three people riding in a sport utility vehicle were injured Tuesday evening when the SUV went off Route 9, according to a statement by Maine State Police on Wednesday afternoon.
The accident occurred about 6:40 p.m. as Hazen Cook, 51, of Calais was driving a 2005 Suzuki SUV east on a section of the highway known as Day Hill, state police said. Cook allegedly lost control of the vehicle, which went off the south side of the road and rolled over, coming to rest on its driver’s side.
Police did not indicate what may have caused the car to go off the road, but inclement weather that moved through eastern Maine Tuesday evening could have been a factor.
Cook and two passengers — Leisha Grass, 51, of Bangor and Steven Dillodeau, 42, of Calais — were trapped in the vehicle and had to be extricated, according to state police. Cook, who suffered non-life-threatening injuries, and Grass, who had head injuries, were flown by LifeFlight helicopter to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.
Dillodeau suffered minor injuries and was taken by ambulance to Calais Regional Hospital, police added.
A nursing supervisor at EMMC said Wednesday evening that he had no information about Cook or Grass.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation, police said. Trooper Staci Carpenter, the primary officer investigating, was supervised at the scene by Sgt. Alden Bustard.
The Washington County Sheriff’s Department, Maine Warden Service and firefighters from Alexander, Baileyville and Wesley all responded and assisted state police.
