PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — Joe McCloskey scored 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds to help the UMaine-Fort Kent Bengals roll to a 67-47 men’s basketball victory over the UM-Presque Isle Owls Thursday night.
Jorge Matesanz and Jake Rioux each came off the bench to add 11 points apiece for the Bengals, now 4-7. Qaadir Ali chipped in with 10 points, six rebounds and two steals.
UMFK outrebounded UMPI 42-35.
Chase Vicaire paced UMPI with 10 points and six rebounds. Nick Lenhard and Kevin Collins each added nine points.
UMFK posted a 31-23 halftime lead and then outscored the Owls 36-24 in the second half.
Bates 71, Bowdoin 51
At Lewiston, Bates pulled away in the second half to defeat Bowdoin in a non-conference game at Alumni Gym.
The Polar Bears drop their second straight contest and fall to 4-2. Bates improves to 7-0 by snapping a four-game losing streak to Bowdoin. Bates led at halftime 32-30 and outscored Bowdoin 39-21 in the second half.
Bates had three players in double figures, led by Graham Safford’s 12. He also recorded 8 rebounds, 7 assists and 3 steals. The Bobcats received a boost from sophomore brothers Marcus and Malcolm Delpeche. Marcus Delpeche chipped in with 11 points, 11 rebounds and 4 assists while Malcolm Delpeche added 10 points and 6 rebounds.
The Bobcats dominated the glass, owning a 39-22 advantage in rebounding. Bowdoin’s Lucas Hausman led all players with 22 points while Keegan Pieri pitched in 10 for the Polar Bears.
Bates held a slim 32-30 lead at halftime thanks to a lay-up at the buzzer by Justin Zukowski. Bowdoin regained the lead early in the second half thanks to four consecutive points by Pieri, 34-32, but that would prove to be the last lead of the game for the Polar Bears. Bates rolled off a quick 10-1 spurt, sparked by 8 points from Billy Selmon, to take a 42-35 edge.
Bates went on a 19-1 run to put the contest out of reach.
