Celtics recall three from Red Claws
BOSTON — The Boston Celtics have recalled rookies Dwight Powell, Marcus Smart and James Young from the Maine Red Claws.
In the Red Claws 110-106 win over Fort Wayne on Thursday, Powell recorded 21 points on 9-14 (.642) shooting from the field, four rebounds, one steal and one block in 26 minutes.
In his first appearance with the Red Claws this season, Smart tallied six points, five rebounds, seven assists, four steals and one block in 29 minutes of action.
James Young scored a game-high 31 points, including shooting 7 of 10 from beyond the arc, pulled down nine rebounds, had three assists, three steals and one block in 37 minutes.
Dempster takes job with Cubs
Longtime major league pitcher Ryan Dempster officially retired after 16 seasons and accepted a job in the front office of the Chicago Cubs.
Dempster, who pitched for the Cubs from 2004 to 2012, returns to Chicago as a special assistant to president Theo Epstein and general manager Jed Hoyer.
Dempster is hoping to persuade free-agent pitcher Jon Lester, a former teammate with the Boston Red Sox, to sign with the Cubs.
Bears receiver out for season
Chicago Bears wide receiver Brandon Marshall reportedly is out for the season after suffering two broken ribs and a lung injury Thursday night in the Bears’ 41-28 loss to the Dallas Cowboys.
The Bears said Marshall was still in a Chicago hospital Friday.
While making a fourth-down catch in the second quarter, Marshall was kneed in the back by defensive back Barry Church. Marshall was taken by ambulance to a local hospital, where doctors reportedly treated him for a collapsed lung.
The Bears already have ruled him out for their game next week against the New Orleans Saints, and NFL.com and ESPN.com both have reported he will miss the rest of the season.
Marshall, 30, has 61 catches for 721 yards and eight touchdowns this season.
NFL investigating Cowboys
The NFL reportedly is investigating whether the Dallas Cowboys concealed an injury to quarterback Tony Romo.
After Dallas’ 41-28 win over the Bears on Thursday night, Romo said he has been playing with a broken rib since early in the season. But the team had not listed the injury on the weekly injury report.
If the Cowboys failed to list an injury they knew about, they could be subject to a fine. The New York Jets were fined $125,000 in 2009 for failing to list quarterback Brett Favre’s torn biceps tendon for the final month of the 2008 season.
Romo has been listed on the injury report all season because of his back, which was surgically repaired in the offseason. He also suffered transverse process fractures when he took a knee to the back against the Washington Redskins on Oct. 27.
Kansas hires Beaty as coach
Kansas hired Texas A&M wide receivers coach David Beaty as its new coach on Friday.
Beaty, who has a history at Kansas, will take over for Clint Bowen, who served as interim coach for the final eight games this season after Charlie Weis was fired. Bowen will be part of Beaty’s new staff.
Beaty, 44, spent three years at Texas A&M and also served as the Aggies’ recruiting coordinator. He earned a reputation as a great recruiter and helped develop Mike Evans, who was the seventh pick in the NFL draft earlier this year.
