GRAY, Maine — A system churning up the Atlantic Ocean is expected to bring two to three days of snow, rain and freezing rain to most of the state, according to the National Weather Service.
On Monday morning, winter storm watches had been issued for northern Oxford, Somerset and Franklin counties, along with northern Penobscot and Piscataquis and all of Aroostook County, said Tom Hawley, a forecaster at the weather service’s Gray office.
Precipitation is expected to start Tuesday morning in the southern part of the state, and it may linger into Friday in northern sections of Maine, Hawley said.
The storm is expected to be more wet than white, but far northern Maine could see mostly snow. It is expected to start as snow Tuesday before changing over to freezing rain and rain.
“We’ll have a combination of all kinds of weather throughout the state of Maine,” Hawley said.
In addition to the forecast nor’easter, many communities woke up Monday to find temperatures well below zero.
Some of the chilliest readings were in Aroostook County, with Presque Isle checking in at 15 below, Houlton at 14 below and Caribou at minus 12.
