AUGUSTA, Maine — A fire destroyed a three-unit apartment building in Augusta.

Five people lived in the building on State Street, and they all made it out unharmed, along with four cats.

The blaze was less than half a mile away from last week’s fire on Northern Avenue, which displaced 27 people.

The Red Cross is assisting and has taken the tenants to a nearby hotel — the same one where the Northern Avenue tenants are staying.

The Augusta fire chief said they do not believe the fire is suspicious, but at this point, they do not know what caused it.

Tenants told CBS 13 they were sleeping when the fire started around 6 a.m. and heard smoke detectors going off.
