BANGOR, Maine — A group of teens with their faces covered smashed a window at a Hewey Street home Tuesday afternoon while the homeowner was inside and later were taken into custody, according to police.
The homeowner called 911 and startled the young suspects, who took off running, according to Bangor police Sgt. Tim Cotton.
“They were wearing something around their necks, maybe a cape … and their faces were covered,” Cotton said. “We did find a cape and other dark clothing [near the burglarized home].”
Dispatchers were able to relay the suspect descriptions to Bangor police officers in the area. A short time later, Officer Dan Sanborn saw two 16-year-old boys and a 17-year-old boy who matched the descriptions running across the nearby Bangor Municipal Golf Course.
Sanborn intercepted the boys, and he and Officer David Farrar took the suspects into custody. Their names were not released because they are juveniles. They were expected to be released to the custody of their parents later Tuesday, according to Cotton.
Officer Jason Linkletter and his canine partner, Lex, found the dark clothing, including a cape.
The teens were interviewed at the Bangor Police Department and the investigator learned a fourth person may have been involved, Cotton said.
That person has still not been identified, Cotton said.
The investigation led to information that may solve at least three more recent residential burglaries, Cotton said.
“They went out during the investigation and pointed out some homes they recently burglarized,” Cotton said.
The juveniles will face attempted burglary and criminal mischief charges, Cotton said.
