BANGOR, Maine — Much of Maine woke up Thursday morning to fresh snow on the ground, including a foot or more in some locations.
Timothy Duda, a forecaster at the National Weather Service’s Caribou office, said Thursday that the Houlton area had about 13 inches of snow.
Other places that received at least a foot of snow by late afternoon included Linneus, Sherman, Island Falls, North Amity and Dyer Brook in Aroostook County, and Cherryfield in Washington County, according to a snowfall report listing totals in those two counties, as well as Hancock and Penobscot counties.
In Penobscot County, Mattawamkeag, Millinocket and Medway had the most snow, at about 8 inches each, which the rest of the county had totals ranging from 1-3 inches. Hancock County was spared the brunt of the storm, with 3 inches or less, according to the weather service.
Somerset and Franklin counties also saw snow action, according to the weather service’s office in Gray. Receiving roughly half a foot each were Jackman, Eustis and Rangeley.
While serious accidents were few and far between, a tractor-trailer overturned on Route 11 in Patten on Wednesday afternoon, which shut down the road for most of the afternoon. No injuries were reported.
Late Thursday afternoon, slick conditions on Interstate 395 in Brewer led to crashes involving multiple vehicles that prompted Maine State Police to temporarily shut down the westbound lanes during the busy evening commute.
Trooper Tucker Bonneville said about 15 cars were involved in crashes on both the east and westbound lanes of I-395 in Brewer during the busy evening commute after temperatures dropped and a skim of ice formed.
Two people were taken to the hospital to treat injuries that were not considered life threatening, he said.
Power outages also piled Thursday morning, as Emera Maine reported more than 2,600 customers without electricity. As of 8 p.m., however, the number of outages had plunged to 5, all of them in Wade.
Meanwhile, Central Maine Power was still working to restore service to 311 customers, most of them in Somerset County.
According to the weather service, the weekend should be free of snow and rain. Monday’s forecast, however, called for a 20 percent chance of snow during the day and a 30 percent chance of snow at night time.
