BANGOR, Maine — Three Penobscot County men have been indicted by a federal grand jury for allegedly obtaining bath salts from China and selling it in Maine.
Edwin Hamel, 48, of Milford, Harold R. Peters III, 37, of Bradford and Mark Wood, 55, of Old Town were indicted Thursday in Bangor. Hamel was arrested Friday in Florida and Wood was arrested the same day in Maine, according to information posted on the court system’s electronic cases filing system.
Information about Peters was not available Saturday but it would be highly unusual for information about his indictment to be made public prior to his arrest.
The men are accused of being part of a conspiracy to distribute Alpha PVP, a type of bath salts in Maine between Jan. 1, 2012, and March 11, 2014.
In addition to the conspiracy charge, Peters and Hamel are charged with one count each of importation of a controlled substance, possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance and being a felon in possession of a firearm.
If convicted, all three face up to 20 years in federal prison and a fine of up to $1 million.
