WASHINGTON, Maine — A bus carrying the Oceanside High School girls basketball team was clipped by a car Friday night, which then fled the scene.

There were no injuries, according to Knox County Sheriff Donna Dennison.

The Regional School Unit 13 bus was driving east on Route 17 in Washington shortly after 9 p.m. when a dark four-door sedan heading west veered into the oncoming lane and clipped the bus. The car failed to stop and continued driving toward Augusta.

There was minor damage to the bus, Superintendent John McDonald said.

The sheriff’s department put out an alert with the description of the car but it has not been located, Dennison said.

The girls team was headed home from a game at Erskine Academy in South China.

One parent reported that the bus driver took evasive action to prevent a more serious collision. More information was not immediately available.
