PROSPECT, Maine — A 36-year-old woman was taken Monday night to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor after threatening to jump off the Penobscot Narrows Bridge.
Several complaints were made at about 9 p.m. concerning a vehicle parked on the bridge with its lights off, according to a news release from the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office.
Prospect Fire Chief Tim Terry and Fire Capt. Cliff Alley, who live near the bridge, and were dispatched on the complaint, thought the calls were simply about a broken down car, the chief said.
The woman was leaning against the rail when Alley arrived. Another car had stopped in front of her and there were a few teenagers around but they were simply watching, the chief said. The woman ran to Alley and she was hysterical, the chief said. The chief arrived about a minute later followed by other fire department members and Deputies Kyle Wasiela and Kevin Littlefield.
Both the fire chief and deputies reported that the woman said she wanted to jump from the bridge.
The deputies assisted in restraining the woman, who they said was intoxicated and was struggling to free herself from the firefighters.
The woman was transported by ambulance to EMMC.
