LAS VEGAS — Raheem Anderson and Trevon Butler connected for 17 points each on Sunday, leading Husson University of Bangor to a 79-74 men’s basketball victory over 16th-ranked Scranton in the D3hoops.com Classic at South Point Arena.

Aaron Willis contributed 16 points and six rebounds for coach Warren Caruso’s Eagles (7-1). Anderson also posted six rebounds, four assists and three steals while Matt Talbot added seven points and seven rebounds.

Husson shot 48 percent (12-for-25) from 3-point range and converted 19 of 24 free throws.

Brendan Boken and Justin Klingman paced Scranton (6-2) with 18 points and six rebounds each. Kevin Doolan tossed in 15 points and Ross Danzig registered a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds along with five assists.

The Eagles started strong and wound up building a 14-point lead in the first half. Eli Itkin kicked off a key 11-2 run with a 3-pointer at the 8:26 mark, then David Diaz followed with a 3 for Husson, which went 6-for-12 from long distance in the half.

Ethan Danzig countered for Scranton with a layup, but Anderson made a layup and Diaz knocked down a 3 that gave the Eagles a 33-19 lead with 5:26 left in the half.

The Royals cut the deficit to as few as four points on four occasions in the second half, but each time the Eagles answered with points to maintain the upper hand.

Women’s Basketball

Colby 80, Alma 60

At Daytona Beach, Florida, Brooke Chandor went 6-for-9 from 3-point range on the way to game highs of 18 points and nine rebounds on Sunday to lead Colby College of Waterville past Alma (Michigan) College at Embry-Riddle University.
Colby (8-1) takes on Coast Guard Academy at 4 p.m. Monday at Embry-Riddle. Coast Guard (3-4) beat Nazareth College 75-60 on Sunday.
The Mules had four players with 16 points or more. Caitlyn Nolan was 6-for-9 from the field and scored 17 points, while Mia Diplock also scored 17 after hitting seven of her 10 free throws. Carylanne Wolfington finished with 16 points and six rebounds.
Alma (5-6) received 13 points apiece from Grace Wheeler and Reanna Zink.

Men’s Basketball

UConn 81, CCSU 48

Ryan Boatright notched 18 points, five assists and three steals to send the Huskies to a convincing victory over the Blue Devils at home.

Rodney Purvis contributed 14 points and Kentan Facey posted his first career double-double with 12 points and a career-high 12 rebounds for UConn (6-4). Amida Brimah finished with 12 points and two blocks for the Huskies, who shot 53.3 percent despite making just 5-of-19 from 3-point range.

Greg Andrade had 13 points and Matt Mobley recorded nine points on 2-of-10 shooting for Central Connecticut State (2-10). Brandon Peel supplied seven points and six rebounds in the loss.

Rutgers 59, Monmouth 58

Myles Mack hit a jumper as time expired to lift the visiting Scarlet Knights to a win over the Hawks.

Mack finished with 16 points, five rebounds and four assists and Bishop Daniels supplied 12 points and five assists off the bench for Rutgers (8-5). Kadeem Jack accounted for 11 points for the Scarlet Knights, who shot 40.7 percent from the floor.

Deon Jones scored 14 points and Justin Robinson added 13 points and six assists for Monmouth (5-7). Josh James contributed nine points and seven rebounds for the Hawks.

Syracuse 85, Long Beach 67

Rakeem Christmas totaled 24 points and 10 rebounds to lead the host Orange past the 49ers.

Michael Gbinije set career highs with 24 points and eight assists for Syracuse (8-4), which notched consecutive wins for the first time since a three-game streak in late November. Trevor Cooney added 16 points for the Orange, who shot 57.7 percent, including 7-of-12 from 3-point range.

Mike Caffey’s 14-point, six-assist, five-rebound and four-steal performance led the way for Long Beach State (5-9), which fell to 0-8 on the road. Tyler Lamb and Eric McKnight added 14 points apiece for the 49ers, who were outscored in the second half 41-27 and couldn’t close the gap, shooting 6-of-23 from beyond the arc.

Hofstra 88, LIU Brooklyn 62

Junior guard Ameen Tanksley had a career-high 32 points and eight rebounds, leading Hofstra to an 88-62 victory over LIU Brooklyn Sunday afternoon at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Tanksley made 12 of 20 field-goal attempts and 5 of 11 from 3-point range to lead four players who scored in double figures for Hofstra (8-4). Junior guard Juan’ya Green recorded a triple-double, posting 15 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists.

Freshman forward Nura Zanna had 14 points and nine rebounds to lead LIU Brooklyn (4-7). Sophomore guard Iverson Fleming scored 13 points. Sophomore guard Joel Hernandez had 10.

Lafayette 76, NJIT 71

The Lafayette Leopards took blow after blow from NJIT, but the Leopards survived to walk away with a 76-71 victory on Sunday afternoon on Lafayette’s home court in Easton, Pa.

After entering halftime with a two-point advantage, Lafayette opened up its biggest lead at 54-44 midway through the second half. NJIT battled back to make it a two-point game in the final minute, but the Highlanders could not get the bucket they needed to tie it up.

Lafayette sophomore guard Nick Lindner made all eight of his free throws in the final minute of play to help seal the win. Lindner, the second-best foul shooter in the country entering play (91.2 percent), finished with 10 points. He was one of four Leopards in double figures along with senior wing Seth Hinrichs (18), senior forward Dan Trist (17) and senior guard Joey Ptasinski (11).

NJIT sophomore guard Damon Lynn led the Highlanders in scoring with 24 points, while sophomore forward Tim Coleman had 14 and junior guard Ky Howard added 11.

Wake Forest 65, Richmond 63

Devin Thomas tipped in Codi Miller-McIntyre’s last-second heave to hand the visiting Demon Deacons their second consecutive victory over the Spiders.

Miller-McIntyre led the way with 17 points and Thomas pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds while scoring nine points for Wake Forest (7-6), which trailed by four with 40 seconds left. Konstantinos Mitoglou tallied 11 points off the bench, including three clutch 3-pointers while Greg McClinton scored 10 for the Demon Deacons, who survived a 7-of-12 performance from the free-throw line.

T.J. Cline poured in a career-high 22 points for Richmond (7-5), which couldn’t overcome 7-of-13 shooting from the foul line. Kendall Anthony scored 11 of his 21 points in the final seven minutes and Deion Taylor grabbed a personal-best 10 rebounds for the Spiders.
