BANGOR, Maine — A Bangor man accused of a stabbing in June and three motorists who allegedly led police on chases are among the people indicted Monday by the Penobscot County grand jury.
Anthony Bowie, 25, was indicted on a charge of elevated aggravated assault in connection with a June 19 stabbing at the junction of Warren and Sanford streets in Bangor that left a 25-year-old male victim in serious condition.
The stabbing took place during an altercation between Bowie and the victim, whose name was withheld, according to Bangor police Sgt. Tim Cotton.
Bowie, who is well-known to Bangor police, has a criminal record dating back to 2009, when he was 19, and includes misdemeanor convictions for criminal mischief, disorderly conduct and domestic violence assault, according to the Bangor Daily News archives.
He was charged with criminal mischief and two counts of domestic assault in February 2011 after he allegedly stubbed out a cigarette on the face of one woman and punched another in the mouth. Information on how those charges were resolved was not available on Monday.
If convicted of elevated aggravated assault in connection with the June stabbing, Bowie could face up to 30 years in prison and a fine of up to $50,000. He remained in custody Monday at the Penobscot County Jail.
Three people were indicted in connection with separate police chases earlier this year.
Domenic Fagone, 18, of Portland was arrested on the night of Aug. 30 after allegedly running from a drunken driving checkpoint, according to police.
Old Town, Orono and Maine State Police were operating the checkpoint on Route 2 when a blue Toyota driven by Fagone approached, Old Town police Capt. Kyle Smart said at that time.
Old Town police Officer Jordan Norton noticed that Fagone’s eyes were glassy as he pulled up and that he appeared to be under the age of 21. A can of beer was in the center console of the vehicle.
Fagone claimed the beer was not his and offered it to the officer, who told Fagone to pull his vehicle to an area to be questioned further, Smart said. That’s when Fagone took off, striking a curb.
Despite repeated warnings to stop, Fagone fled the checkpoint, and later ditched the vehicle on Park Street in Orono. A short time later, Fagone turned himself in to Old Town police, and a breathalyzer test confirmed that he was over the legal limit of .08, Smart said.
Fagone was indicted on charges of passing a police roadblock, criminal operating under the influence, failing to stop for a police officer, refusing to submit to arrest and operating without a license.
Cynthia Gervais, 57, of Springfield was indicted on charges of operating under the influence, eluding a police officer, driving to endanger, domestic violence criminal threatening, criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon, criminal speed, having a loaded firearm in a vehicle and failure to sign a summons in connection with an Oct. 16 chase.
Maine State Police said that Gervais pointed a shotgun at her boyfriend at his house on Mill Hill Road. When a state police trooper and two game wardens arrived at the house, she had locked herself in her car with the gun and refused to exit.
Gervais then drove off down Route 6 for several miles until she lost control of the car, which came to rest alongside a tree. Gervais was arrested at gunpoint. No shots were fired, and no one was injured.
The third motorist indicted in connection with a police chase was Paul A. Alley, 26, of Hampden, who was charged with aggravated operating after habitual offender revocation, eluding an officer, driving to endanger and criminal speed in connection.
The charges stem from Alley’s Aug. 24 arrest by Hampden police, according to Assistant District Attorney Alice Clifford. Details were not immediately available.
