LINCOLN, Maine — A 50-year-old Medway man suffered hip and head injuries when the minivan he was driving rolled over in the southbound lanes of Interstate 95, a Maine State Police trooper said Monday night.

The driver, Thomas Dewitt, was taken to Penobscot Valley Hospital in Lincoln, Trooper Larry Anderson said. Dewitt’s young niece, who was a passenger in the minivan and whose name was not released, was not hurt, he said.

According to Anderson, the accident happened shortly before 5:30 p.m. near mile marker 226, near the Lincoln offramp, when Dewitt drifted off the roadway, causing his vehicle to roll over twice.

“He was trapped,” Anderson said, adding that Dewitt had to be freed from the wreckage by firefighters from Howland and Lincoln using hydraulic extrication tools.

Anderson said it was not yet clear why Dewitt left the roadway and that the crash remains under investigation.
