VASSALBORO, Maine — A Vassalboro man’s plan to get back on his feet after falling on hard times financially is shattered. He said he found his mobile home on Webber Pond Road trashed last Tuesday.
“When I saw it I was devastated and I thought who would do such a thing?” Michael Kartman said.
Kartman said he’d been staying with friends recently because he couldn’t afford to pay for heat and electricity.
“To see it in this condition it just totally breaks my heart,” he said.
Kartman is disabled and dealing with clinical depression. He said he lives off $790 a month. He doesn’t have insurance he claims he couldn’t afford that either.
“All I can do is board the windows up and try to get help from friends,” Kartman said.
What’s even more frustrating for Kartman is despite all the damage nothing valuable was stolen. It only appears to be an act of vandalism. He’s been trying to sell the home so he could move somewhere more affordable.
“It’s not worth half of what he was asking and he can’t even pay his mortgage now,” Francis Rodrigue, Kartman’s real estate broker, said.
Kartman has no money to pay for repairs either.
“Mike’s out of options,” Rodrigue said. “It’s sad that he’s got no place to go and no resources to recover from this.”
“This just makes it so much more difficult that I don’t understand what I can do now,” Kartman said.
Kartman said he filed a report with Maine State Police. CBS 13 is waiting to obtain a copy of the report.
The Pleasant Street United Methodist Church in Waterville is accepting donations to help Kartman. People can send donations through the mail or contact Pastor Thomas Blackstone.
