PORTLAND, Maine — Portland police on Monday afternoon released more information about gunshots reported in the city early Sunday.
Portland police are working alongside investigators in neighboring Westbrook to determine if cases of overnight gunfire in the two cities were related.
So far few details have been released, but the Portland Police Department issued a basic timeline, noting that officers were dispatched to the area of Birchvale Drive around 4:45 a.m. Sunday in response to reports of gunshots.
“Patrol officers searched the area and did not locate anything suspicious,” Lt. James Sweatt said in a Monday news release. “At 9:30 a.m., a Birchvale Drive resident contacted the police department and reported their vehicle had been struck by bullets. The vehicle was located in the driveway of a home on Birchvale Drive. The vehicle was towed to the police station for further investigation.”
Sweatt added that nobody was injured in the Portland incident.
Just after 4:30 a.m. Sunday, Westbrook police were called to a single-family home at 430 Bridgton Road, also known as Route 302, for reports of multiple shots fired into the home.
No one was injured in that shooting either, Westbrook Police Sgt. Anthony Ciampi told the Bangor Daily News Sunday. Ciampi also declined to release many details, including the number of shots or whether anyone was home at the time.
Both cases remain under investigation.
Sweatt urged anyone with information about the Portland gunshots or who witnessed the Portland incident to contact the Portland Police Department. Tips can be left through text messages, by texting the keyword “GOTCHA” plus a message to 274637, by calling 874-8584 or visiting the department website, portland-police.com.
Ciampi asked anyone with information about the Westbrook shooting to call Detective Sgt. John Desjardins at 854-2531 ext. 2414, or the department tipline at 591-8117.
