Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections, or PANDAS, describes children who develop — usually “overnight” — dramatic symptoms, including obsessive compulsive disorder, tic disorders and/or become moody, irritable or show concerns about separating from parents or loved ones, according to the National Institutes of Health. The symptoms worsen following strep infections.
The sudden, dramatic onset of symptoms is followed by slow, gradual improvement that can last several months or longer.
