LEEDS, Maine — A father and his son, a 14-year-old freshman at St. Dominic Academy, were killed on Tuesday morning in a collision on Route 202 in Androscoggin County, according to officials.
The two-vehicle collision occurred shortly after 8 a.m. in the area of the intersection of Route 202 and Leeds Junction Road, according to Lt. Glenn Holt of the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office.
Ghislain Cloutier, 49, of Winthrop was traveling east when his Honda Accord crossed into the westbound lane and struck an SUV driven by Ralph Ryder, 59, of Livermore Falls, according to Holt.
Cloutier’s 14-year old son, Casey, was a passenger in his vehicle, Holt said. Both were killed. Ryder was taken to Central Maine Medical Center, where he is in stable condition, the lieutenant said.
Donald Fournier, president of St. Dominic Academy, confirmed Tuesday afternoon that the younger Cloutier played on the Auburn school’s junior varsity hockey team.
Fournier said Casey Cloutier was a freshman.
Dave Guthro, spokesman for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland, expressed his condolonces to the Cloutier family.
“The prayers of Bishop Deeley and the entire Diocese of Portland are with this family,” Guthro said in an email.
Fournier said the school will hold a memorial Mass on campus soon and grief counselors will be available at the school Wednesday morning and when students return from Christmas break next week.
Traffic was detoured around the crash using Leeds Junction Road, Holt said. The crash remains under investigation.
Leeds and Greene firefighters and state police assisted sheriff’s deputies.
