LAS VEGAS, Neveda — Trevon Butler’s 3-pointer at the buzzer gave the Husson University men’s basketball team a 53-51 win over Hampden-Sydney on Monday night at the South Point Arena in the D3Hoops.com Classic.
Both teams are now 8-1.
Hampden-Sydney took a 51-47 lead on a pair of Mike Murray free throws with 2:54 left. Aaron Willis then found Butler for a three to get Husson within one with 2:23 left.
Neither team could convert for over two minutes, and Butler’s first 3-point attempt went out off a Hampden-Sydney player and the Eagles called timeout with 12 seconds left to draw up Butler’s winning play.
The Eagles took a 27-21 lead at the half courtesy of 13 points from Raheem Anderson and by holding Hampden-Sydney to 26.8 percent shooting in the first 20 minutes.
Hampden-Sydney would eventually come back to knot the game at 39 with 12:17 remaining before taking its four-point lead with under three minutes left.
Butler finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds while Anderson added 19 points and five rebounds. Willis added six points and six rebounds.
Greg Lewis had 13 points and nine rebounds to lead Hampden-Sydney.
Hampden-Sydney shot 37.3 percent for the game while Husson shot 30.4 percent. The Eagles held a 39-34 edge in rebounding.
Husson returns to action on Jan. 6 at Colby.
Women’s Basketball
St. Vincent 78, MMA 23
At Nashville, Tennessee, Monday night, St. Vincent outscored Maine Maritime Academy 31-2 in the first eight minutes of the second half to roll to the victory.
Taylor Mathers led the Bearcats with a game-high 22 points, nine rebounds, two assists and a steal. Hannah Carroll chipped in with 10 points, five rebounds, four assists, and two steals.
Kristi Willey led the Mariners of Castine with six points and a block. Charlette Bradley and Mary Badeen pulled down 11 rebounds each, while adding four points apiece. The Mariners outrebounded the Bearcats 46-45.
