ROCKLAND, Maine — A 41-year-old Portland woman pleaded guilty Monday to providing drugs to her son in prison.
Michele L. White appeared before Justice Daniel Billings in Knox County Superior Court to admit to a single count of trafficking in prison contraband, namely Suboxone. Suboxone is prescribed to treat opiate addiction, but it also can be used illegally and abused.
Under terms of a deferred disposition reached between the prosecution and defense, if White refrains from further criminal conduct over the next six months, she would be sentenced to one year in jail with all but 45 days suspended.
White also would be placed on probation for a year under the agreement.
The prosecutor said prison staff saw her pass something to her son during a visit on March 8. The staff then checked the prisoner and found he had a balloon filled with 25 Suboxone strips.
White later confessed, the prosecutor said.
