WISCASSET, Maine — Wiscasset police Officer Donald H. Smith Jr. died suddenly at his home Wednesday at the age of 48.
Smith died of natural causes, Wiscasset Police Chief Troy Cline said Thursday.
Smith worked in the public safety field for more than 30 years, including as an emergency medical technician and assistant director of the Wiscasset Ambulance Service. He served as a firefighter with the Wiscasset Fire Department and as a corrections and transport officer for the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office.
Cline said the small police force was struggling to cope with the devastating news.
“He has proven himself to be an exemplary citizen and officer,” Cline said in a release. “Everyone in the Wiscasset PD family and the community is feeling the loss, especially his fellow officers [with whom] he worked side by side. … The Wiscasset Police Department mourns the tragic loss of our brother, Donnie.”
Funeral services have not yet been set, Cline said.
