ST. GEORGE, Maine — A veteran Maine school superintendent has been hired to serve as the interim superintendent for the newly created town school system.

George Joseph of Fayette has been hired to serve as interim superintendent through June 30, according to school board member William Reinhardt.

Joseph is part-time superintendent of Carrabassett Valley. He also served as superintendent of the Vinalhaven school system from 1998 through 2008. During that period, the island residents had a new kindergarten through 12th-grade school built, Reinhardt said.

The board last month also hired Scott Vaitones to be the school system’s interim business manager through June 30.

Residents voted in November to withdraw from Regional School Unit 13 based in Rockland. The town voted in December to elect its first school board members.
