PORTLAND, Maine —The Boston Red Sox have announced the Portland Sea Dogs coaching staff for the 2015 season. Eastern League Manager of the Year Billy McMillon will return to manage the Sea Dogs for a second season.

McMillon will be joined by hitting coach Dave Joppie, pitching coach Kevin Walker and athletic trainer Brandon Henry.

Former NHL star Parise dies

Former NHL star J.P. Parise, 73, died of lung cancer after battling the disease for a year.
Wild star Zach Parise, J.P.’s son, left the team to be with the family this week.
J.P. Parise spent parts of nine seasons with the Minnesota North Stars and was a fan favorite, scoring 20 or more goals three times and skating in the NHL All-Star Game twice.

Hawks to go up for sale

The Atlanta Hawks will be put up for sale after the franchise’s owners announced Thursday that they unanimously approved a plan to sell all shares in the team.

The sale will include the operating rights to the team’s arena, Philips Arena, and the franchise is expected to stay in Atlanta.

Co-owners Bruce Levenson and Ed Peskowitz own 50.1 percent of the team, and it was reported last week that the full ownership group was ready to join them in the sale.

Werth faces shoulder surgery

Washington Nationals outfielder Jayson Werth will have arthroscopic surgery on his troublesome right shoulder Friday and is expected to be out two to three months, according to a Fox Sports report.

Depending on the speed of his recovery, Werth could miss all of spring training and possibly the start of the regular season.

The 35-year-old left fielder played through the injury last year, batting .292 with 16 home runs and 82 RBIs in 147 regular-season games.

Werth has a career .276 batting average with 186 home runs and 659 RBIs.

Yankees’ prospect injured in attack

New York Yankees pitching prospect Ty Hensley is recovering from injuries sustained in a “brutal attack” during the holidays.

Former Weber State linebacker Anthony Morales was charged with aggravated assault and battery on Thursday for allegedly breaking the Hensley’s jaw during an argument about signing bonuses, according to police.

Morales, who signed with the Carolina Panthers in July and was released in August, and Hensley are both from Edmond, Oklahoma, just north of Oklahoma City.

Hensley received a $1.2 million signing bonus after he was drafted in the first round by the Yankees in 2012. The 21-year-old was the 30th overall pick.

Laimbeer returns as Liberty coach

The New York Liberty had second thoughts after letting Bill Laimbeer’s contract expire following the 2014 season and rehired him as their head coach on Thursday.

The Liberty had a 26-42 record the past two seasons under Laimbeer and had failed to make the playoffs during that time. The two sides parted ways in October.

Laimbeer previously coached the Detroit Shock to three WNBA titles and served as the Shock’s general manager and coach from 2002 to 2009.

Martin signs with Bucks

Forward Kenyon Martin signed a 10-day contract with the Milwaukee Bucks.

Martin last played in the NBA in 2013 with the New York Knicks and was a team mate of Bucks head coach Jason Kidd in New Jersey. Martin was the number one overall pick in the 2000 draft has played for 14 seasons, averaging 12.5 points and 6.9 rebounds.

White Sox finalize deal with Bonifacio

The Chicago White Sox and utility player Emilio Bonifacio reached agreement Thursday on a one-year, $4 million contract.

The deal calls for the 29-year-old to receive $3 million in 2015, with the White Sox holding a $4 million option for 2016 with a $1 million buyout.

In eight major league seasons, Bonifacio has a .262 career average with 164 stolen bases for seven different teams.

Nets’ Williams sidelined

Brooklyn Nets guard Deron Williams is out indefinitely after an MRI on Thursday revealed a fracture to cartilage in his ribs.

The team termed it a “fracture of the cartilage portion of the left 12th rib.”

Williams is averaging 13.9 points, 6.3 assists and 3.0 rebounds in 32 games this season.
