SANGERVILLE, Maine — Poor road conditions are to blame for a single-vehicle accident that sent a Sangerville woman to the hospital early Saturday morning, according to the Piscataquis County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheila Starbird, 56, was traveling north on Route 23 when she struck a patch of snow that had drifted across the road, Sheriff’s Lt. James Kane said Saturday afternoon.

Starbird lost control of her 2008 Chevrolet sedan, which crossed over the southbound lane, struck a utility pole and came to rest in a snowbank.

Kane said Starbird, who was wearing her safety belt at the time of the accident, complained of back injuries and was brought by ambulance to Mayo Regional Hospital in Dover-Foxcroft.

Starbird was alone in the vehicle, and the car was declared a total loss, Kane said.
