SANGERVILLE, Maine — Poor road conditions are to blame for a single-vehicle accident that sent a Sangerville woman to the hospital early Saturday morning, according to the Piscataquis County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheila Starbird, 56, was traveling north on Route 23 when she struck a patch of snow that had drifted across the road, Lt. James Kane said Saturday afternoon.

Starbird lost control of her 2008 Chevrolet sedan, which crossed into the southbound lane, struck a utility pole and came to rest in a snowbank.

Kane said Starbird, who was wearing her safety belt at the time of the accident, complained of back injuries and was brought by ambulance to Mayo Regional Hospital in Dover-Foxcroft.

Starbird was alone in the vehicle, and the car was declared a total loss, Kane said.
