Brett Gerry, a running back and linebacker from Marshwood High School in South Berwick, was named winner of the 44th Fitzpatrick Trophy on Sunday.
The Portland-based award honors a top senior football player in the state for performance on and off the field.
Gerry rushed for 2,263 yards, scored 32 touchdowns and kicked 22 extra points in leading Marshwood to a 12-0 season and the Class B state championship. The team captain also was the Hawks’ third-leading tackler on defense and handled the team’s punts and kickoffs.
The state crown was the first for the Hawks since 1989, when Steve Knight became the only other Marshwood player to win the Fitzpatrick award.
Gerry also is a star wrestler for Marshwood, winning the Class A individual state championship in the 182-pound weight class each of the last two years to help the Hawks extend their current streak of state team championships in the sport to three consecutive years.
Other finalists for this year’s Fitzpatrick Trophy were Joe Fitzpatrick of Cheverus of Portland — earlier named the 2014 Gatorade Maine Football Player of the Year — and Chris Carney of Wells.
