BANGOR — Gracie Theatre at Husson University will screen the award-winning Maine Masters film, “Jon Imber’s Left Hand,” at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 27.

Considered an important American painter at the height of his career, Jon Imber was diagnosed with ALS in the fall of 2012. The film tells the story of how he embraced his last 18 months of life with love, laughter and art, and how he grew and changed as an artist through his determination to live and paint with passion and resolve to the end.

Imber maintained a studio in Stonington where he summered with his wife, painter Jill Hoy.

During the winter months, Imber taught at Harvard, and they lived and worked in Somerville, Massachusetts.

His work is in numerous museum collections including Bowdoin College Museum of Art, Danforth Museum, DeCordova Museum, Farnsworth Museum and Fogg Art Museum, and in private and corporate collections across the country.

A Maine Masters production directed by Richard Kane, the film won Best Film at Hamptons Take 2 Documentary Film Festival, and Best Documentary at the Boston Jewish Film Festival. Maine Sunday Telegram’s Daniel Kany called it “A masterpiece of intimacy in the face of tragedy… an extraordinary accomplishment in film,” and Sebastian Smee, art critic at Boston Globe said, “This beautiful film … takes the wind out of you.”

Admission is free. Those who wish to may make a donation of $5.
