Tiger loses a tooth while celebrating Vonn victory
Tiger Woods lost a front tooth after being hit in the face by a video camera while watching girlfriend Lindsey Vonn take a record 63rd World Cup Alpine ski win in Italy on Monday, according to his agent.
The former world number one surprised Vonn when he turned up in the resort of Cortina d’Ampezzo for the Super-G race but caused more of a stir when photographs showed a gap where his tooth had been.
“During a crush of photographers at the awards’ podium at the World Cup event in Italy, a media member with a shoulder-mounted video camera pushed and surged towards the stage, turned and hit Tiger Woods in the mouth,” the golfer’s agent told USA Today.
“Woods’s tooth was knocked out by the incident,” added Mark Steinberg.
Woods, who was limited to nine tournaments last year due to back issues, said earlier this month that he will make his season debut at the Jan.29-Feb. 1 Waste Management Phoenix Open.
Rangers acquire Gallardo in trade
The Texas Rangers traded away some of their future to try to be a contender again in 2015.
The Rangers obtained right-handed starter Yovani Gallardo from the Milwaukee Brewers in a deal that sent three minor-leaguers to the Brewers, the Rangers announced Monday.
The Rangers gave up right-handed pitchers Corey Knebel and Marcos Diplan and shortstop Luis Sardinas.
What they got in return was the 28-year-old Gallardo, a native of Fort Worth, Texas, who went 8-11 with a 3.51 ERA for the Brewers last season. Gallardo has an 89-64 record in eight major-league seasons, and was an All-Star in 2010. He is durable, making at least 30 starts each of the past six seasons.
Gallardo is expected to be the No. 3 starter in a Rangers rotation that includes ace Yu Darvish and No. 2 starter Derek Holland.
Bruins to host Canadiens in ’16 Winter Classic
The Boston Bruins will play host to the Montreal Canadiens on New Year’s Day in the 2016 Winter Classic at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass., according WEEI.com. An official announcement is expected over All-Star weekend.
The Bruins previously played host to the Winter Classic at Fenway Park in 2010, beating the Philadelphia Flyers, and Boston Red Sox COO Sam Kennedy said last month that the team hoped the game would return to the baseball stadium. However, Fenway Park’s capacity is 37,400 compared to Gillette Stadium’s 68,756.
The Canadiens have never played in the Winter Classic. They did play outdoor games against Edmonton in the Heritage Classic in 2003 and against the Flames in 2011 in Calgary.
Blackhawks’ Carcillo suspended six games
Chicago Blackhawks winger Daniel Carcillo was suspended for six games by the NHL on Monday for a cross-check that injured Winnipeg Jets forward Mathieu Perreault on Friday.
It is the ninth time Carcillo has been suspended in his nine NHL seasons, and the time off will cost him about $40,000.
His history of suspensions and fines (three) led to the more severe penalty this time — cross-checking is usually handled with an in-game penalty.
The Jets said Perreault is out at least through the All-Star break.
Perreault was injured when Carcillo hit him in the left arm with a two-handed cross-check, which Carcillo later called “just kind of a hockey play.
I didn’t think it was very malicious or anything, you know?”
In levying the suspension, the NHL said, “This is not a hockey play in the sense that it has nothing to do with the puck and the blow is delivered after the whistle has blown the play dead.”
