BANGOR, Maine — The Husson University Eagles surged to 18-point lead early in the second half and then held off the Johnson State Badgers to earn a 68-61 North Atlantic Conference win in women’s basketball action Friday night at Newman Gym.
The Badgers cut Husson’s lead down to 66-61 when Ashley Goddard hit a 3-pointer with 10 seconds left, but Denae Johnson answered with two free throws for the Eagles to secure the win.
Stephanie Comstock recorded 12 points and 7 rebounds while Samira Cruz contributed 11 points and 6 rebounds to pace the Eagles (9-6, 7-2). Katy Brochu chipped in with 10 points, 7 rebounds and 3 steals and Chandler Guerrette added 8 points and 4 rebounds.
Husson outrebounded the Badgers 54-39.
Brittany Robertson paced the Badgers with 16 points.
Castleton 67, UMF 57
At Farmington, Castleton State battled to a three-point halftime lead and then held off UMaine-Farmington down the stretch to improve to 13-3 overall and 9-0 in the North Atlantic Conference.
The Spartans sank a perfect 6-for-6 from the line in the final minute.
Jade Desroches poured in 30 points to lead Castleton and Lindsay Sabo added 14.
Bridget Humphrey and Elizabeth Ferry each scored 11 points to lead UMF (6-10, 5-4). Lindsay Ranquist added 10 points while Meghan Smith contributed 6 points, 9 rebounds and 2 assists.
MMA 67, Lyndon St. 43
At Castine, the Maine Maritime Academy Mariners trailed by one at halftime but then outscored Lyndon State 67-43 to earn the NAC victory.
Kristi Willey paced MMA (6-10, 3-6) with 21 points while Mary Badeen chipped in with 12 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists and 4 steals. Maggie McConkey contributed with 10 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists and Mackenzie Vosburgh added 11 points, 5 rebounds and 3 steals.
Aimee Thompson sparked Lyndon (3-12, 2-7) with 16 points.
Thomas 75, Green Mountain 24
At Waterville, Thomas earned its first North Atlantic Conference victory of the season.
Katie McAllister posted 27 points and 14 rebounds, while Jordan Agger-Barnes finished with 10 points and 17 rebounds in the victory.
Men’s Basketball
Husson 90, Johnston St. 67
At Newman Gym in Bangor, Husson won its fifth in a row with a 90-67 victory over Johnson State. With the victory, the Eagles improve to 13-2 and 9-0 in the NAC while Johnson slips to 2-14 and 2-7.
Husson’s Trevon Butler was the high-scorer on the night, putting up 20 points, and grabbing six rebounds, three steals, one assist, and one block. Four other Eagles scored in double digits on the night: Raheem Anderson with 17, Jacob Moore with 13, and Connor Adams and Josiah Hartley with 10 each. Mitch Worcester had a game-high eight rebounds.
The teams played a close game in the first half until Husson started to pull away at 16-11 and ended up with an eighteen point lead at 33-15, with 4:25 remaining. The Eagles headed into halftime up 49-22.
In the second half, Husson maintained a comfortable lead. Johnson State outscored Husson 45-41 but never threatened the lead. For the Badgers, Ron Adrian scored a team-high 13 points. Demetrius Slade added 12for the visitors, and Asim Khan had 10. Terrance Manning had a team-high seven rebounds on the night.
Husson will take on Lyndon State at 3 p.m. on Saturday at Newman Gym. Johnson State will travel to Maine Maritime for a 2 p.m. game.
Castleton 68, UMF 51
At Farmington, the University of Maine at Farmington (4-11, 3-6) was outmatched by Castleton’s Rob Coloutti and his 3-point shooting in Friday night’s, 68-51, loss to Castleton at Dearborn Gymnasium.
Coloutti drained four three-pointers on his way to a game-high 18 points and seven rebounds. Chad Copeland recorded a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Jimmie Chaisson led the Beavers with 11 points and six rebounds off the bench.
