Workshop for artists, writers

BANGOR — The city of Bangor’s Commission on Cultural Development will host a free workshop for artists and writers on grant writing and grant application processes 6-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 4, in the Story Room of the Bangor Public Library.

Panelists Kathy Ann Shaw, Cathy Melio, Stephanie Harp and Tom Avila-Beck will make short presentations and answer questions about identifying and applying for grants.

The workshop is second in a series that will address the professional development needs of artists in the community.

Earlier in the day, the Maine Arts Commission will host its second annual Arts Iditarod 1-3 p.m. at the University of Maine Museum of Art. The agency will go over the new grants, review the agency’s ongoing grant programs, share the simplified guidelines and demonstrate the new electronic grants application and review system.

February Vacation Camp

BANGOR — Penobscot Theatre Company announced that it will host a theatrical day camp for children ages 4 to 14 during February school vacation, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Friday, Feb. 16-20, at the Bangor Opera House, 131 Main St. Each day, expert and energetic teaching artists will lead participants in various dramatic activities centering around a new theme.

Because each day will be centered on a different theme, the camp will be flexible and children may attend any or all of the days. Themes may include. but will not be limited to, musical theater, Shakespeare, storytelling, improvisation and theatrical design. Each day will end with a showcase of the work for students’ families at 3:45 p.m.

‘The Jungle Book’ auditions

BANGOR — Robinson Ballet will hold auditions for dancers age 12 and up for “The Jungle Book” at 11 a.m. Saturday Feb, 7, at its studio,107 Union St. Girls with pointe experience should bring pointe shoes.

Performance dates for “The Jungle Book” are 10 a.m. Friday, May 15, at The Grand Auditorium in Ellsworth; and 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, May 16-17, at the Gracie Theatre in Bangor.

Vacation Art Program

HAMPDEN — Windover Art Center will hold its Vacation Art Program 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday, Feb. 16-20,  at Hampden Congregational Church. The program is open to children age 6 and up. Activities offered include pottery, digital art, photography, stop action animation, fused glass, jewelry making, sewing, games, cooking, drawing and painting.

New play

ORONO — Stillwater Community Arts will present the first public reading of the new play from the author of “One Blue Tarp.”

“Hair Frenzy” by Travis Baker will be read 7-10 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 3, at Keith Anderson Community House, 19 Bennoch Road. The play returns to Clara, Maine, for a tale of big hair and big dreams.

Admission is $5 to benefit the Stillwater Community Arts Youth Scholarship Fund.

A post-show discussion will be held at Woodman’s Bar & Grill in Orono.
