BANGOR, Maine — A local man accused of attacking his girlfriend with a razor remained at the Penobscot County Jail on Monday unable to post $100,000 cash bail.
Gabriel Estrela, 29, of Bangor is charged with aggravated assault, a Class B crime, and domestic violence criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon, a Class C crime.
Estrela made his first court appearance Friday at the Penobscot Judicial Center, according to the Penobscot County district attorney’s office. He was not asked to enter a plea because he has not yet been indicted by the Penobscot County grand jury.
His next court appearance is set for March 10.
Estrela was arrested Wednesday by Bangor police, according to Assistant District Attorney Tracy Collins.
The victim reported to police shortly before midnight Monday that Estrela choked her earlier in the evening until she passed out, Collins said. He also cut her clothes off with a razor, then cut her body eight times with the razor, the victim told police.
The prosecutor said that while Estrela threatened to cut her so “she bled to death,” the wounds were not life threatening.
If convicted, Estrela faces up to 10 years in prison on the assault charge and up to five years in prison on the threatening charge.
