Game notes: The Black Bears begin the second half of the conference season looking to make strides with their defensive intensity and consistency. UMaine lost 63-58 to New Hampshire on Wednesday. The two-time defending AE champion Great Danes have won eight in a row, the last four without leading scorer Peter Hooley, a junior guard who has returned to his native Australia to be with his mother, who is battling cancer. Albany, which edged Vermont 47-44 on Wednesday, is limiting AE opponents to only 53.2 ppg on 37 percent shooting. The Great Danes also have been efficient on offense, shooting 44 percent from the field and a league-best .809 from the foul line. UMaine’s Beal has missed back-to-back games with bruised ribs and again is questionable.

Albany cruised past Vermont 89-48 on Thursday. The Bears have held 10 consecutive opponents under 60 points, the first such UM streak since the 2005.
