SOMERVILLE, Maine — A family in Somerville is left with almost nothing after their house burned to the ground on Sunday.

The fire on Patricktown Road, within a quarter mile of the Windsor town line, was reported around 10 a.m. Firefighters said when they arrived on scene flames were shooting from the house.

Somerville Fire Department Chief Michael R. Dostie said strong wind helped the fire spread quickly, but no one was home and no injuries were reported.

“It would have been a disaster if people would’ve been home. I don’t know if they would’ve gotten out fast enough,” said Dostie.

Officials said several indoor pets and animals in a barn behind the home didn’t survive. The state fire marshal’s office is looking into the cause, but firefighters on scene said it appears to be accidental.

The Red Cross is assisting the family affected.
