BLUE HILL, Maine — A 44-year-old woman was hospitalized Sunday after being struck by a car while cross-country skiing on Morgan Bay Road, according to police.

Ciona Ulbrich of Blue Hill was standing by the side of the road a few minutes after 2 p.m. Sunday when a 2000 Chevrolet Tracker slid out of control on the snow-covered road, according to the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department. She had skied out of a driveway across the road and was waiting for another skier to cross, when Gary Mosley, 78, of Surry crested a hill while driving the Chevrolet and then swerved to avoid the second skier, Deputy Jeff McFarland said in a written summary of the incident.

“Mosley lost control of his car, and it slid across the northbound lane, and he struck Ulbrich,” McFarland said. “Mosley did not see Ulbrich as he was focused on the [second skier] coming out the mouth of the driveway.”

Ulbrich was taken to Blue Hill Memorial Hospital where she was treated for possible hip, leg and arm injuries, McFarland said. The Chevrolet had minor damage to its front end, he added.

McFarland said Monday that Ulbrich did not suffer any broken bones in the collision. She was treated and then released from the hospital later on Sunday, he said.

“She’s a tough cookie,” the deputy said. “She took quite a hit.”
