DEXTER, Maine — A barn was destroyed and multiple cows perished in a Monday fire that sent crews from three counties to a Ripley Road residence, according to Dexter Fire Chief Matt Connor.
The blaze was reported shortly before 9 a.m., Connor said Tuesday.
According to Conner, 22 cows perished in the blaze.
The chief said the barn was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived at the scene, and they focused on making sure the fire did not spread to a nearby house.
The farm is known locally as Sherburne Farm, Connor said. A cause for the blaze has not been determined but the state fire marshal’s office is investigating.
The barn was about 15-20 feet from the house, Connor said, but the house was not damaged. It was not clear if the barn was insured.
