Former Bar Harbor town manager Dana Reed has been named a finalist for a city manager position in Sedona, Arizona.
Reed, one of seven finalists, served as Bar Harbor’s town manager for 27 years before his separation with the town in May 2014. Since last June he has served as interim town manager for Tremont.
Reed’s continued role as Bar Harbor’s town manager became a controversial issue in late 2013 after he put former police chief Nate Young on paid leave and then fired him. Reed placed Young on leave last October while an investigation was conducted into a Sept. 25 incident in the local village of Town Hill.
At a public hearing in February 2014 on Young’s firing, Reed told the council that Young “violated the public trust” last fall and behaved inappropriately during the subsequent investigation. The council voted to uphold Young’s termination.
Sedona, population 10,000, is a tourist destination known for its array of red sandstone formations.
Finalists will be interviewed March 4, 5 and 6, and a decision could come as early as March 6. They will meet with city employees, the Sedona City Council and community members over the course of the three days.
Recruitment firm Peckham & McKenney began searching for a new city manager in Sedona in October 2014 and received 108 resumes for the position, the website states. The Sedona City Council reviewed the top 17 applicants and on Friday chose its top candidates to interview in-person.
Other finalists to be interviewed are Justin Clifton, city manager in Delta, Colorado; Anthony O’Rourke, city manager in Yakima, Washington; Chad Adams, city manager of Albert Lea, Minnesota; and D. Michael Segrest, local government consultant in Snowmass Village, Colorado.
