UMaine salvages finale
At Winter Haven, Florida, Scott Heath of Westbrook allowed five hits and three runs in seven innings on Sunday, pitching the University of Maine baseball team to a 6-4 victory over the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in the finale of their four-game series.
The senior left-hander struck out six and walked one and also helped his own cause with a double, two singles and an RBI. Charlie Butler pitched 1 ⅓ innings of one-hit relief to notch a save.
Sam Balzano of Portland collected four singles in the leadoff spot, Brett Chappell doubled and singled with two RBIs and Luke Morrill of South Thomaston singled twice for the Black Bears (1-3), who did not commit an error.
Luke Meeter hit two singles and Mike Porcaro drove in two runs for the Panthers (3-1). Reliever Justin Jaquish took the loss, giving up three hits and three runs in two-thirds of an inning.
Brian Doran hit a sacrifice fly and Chappell stroked a two-run double in UMaine’s three-run first, but UMW answered with three runs. Sam Koenig and Tyler Hermann had RBI singles.
The Bears took the lead for good with three runs in the sixth. Jon Salcedo reached on an error, then Balzano and Alex Cabrera hit consecutive, one-out singles to produce a run. Heath delivered a run-scoring double and Doran hit another sac fli to make it 6-3.
On Saturday, UWM pounded out 29 hits and scored 23 runs in a doubleheader sweep of UMaine.
The Panthers won the opener 12-3 and took the second game 11-7.
In Game 2, Nick Unes’ two-run double highlighted a four-run eighth inning that lifted Wisconsin-Milwaukee (3-0) to the win.
Nunes added another double and a single among 14 hits for the winners, while Meeter drove in two runs with a double and two singles and scored four runs. Tell Taylor hit a two-run homer and a single to support relief winner Alex McIntosh, who allowed only one hit and no runs in three innings.
Morrill paced UMaine with three singles and two RBIs. Luc Della Fera singled twice (RBI) and Salcedo stroked a run-scoring double.
Jacob Gosselin-Deschesnes (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing a run with three walks in 2 ⅔ innings of relief. Starter Jake Marks gave up 11 hits and seven earned runs in 4 ⅓ innings.
UMaine took a short-lived 7-5 lead in the fifth on Chappell’s sacrifice fly, Salcedo’s double and an RBI single by Della Fera.
In the first game, four Black Bears errors led to six unearned runs amidst UMW’s 15-hit onslaught.
Starter Justin Langley worked five innings of two-hit, shutout ball with six strikeouts for the winners. Unes drove in four runs with a triple and a single, while Mitch Gelfi (2 singles) and Tyler Hermann (double, single) each knocked in two runs.
Chappell singled twice and drove in a run among six hits for UMaine and Doran singled twice. Heath hit an RBI double.
Freshman right-hander Justin Courtney of Bangor suffered the loss, surrendering seven hits and five runs (3 earned) with two walks and a strikeout in 3 ⅔ innings.
Men’s Basketball
Husson 92, Johnson State 88
At Johnson, Vermont, Trevon Butler and Aaron Willis combined to make seven of eight late free throws to propel Husson to a North Atlantic Conference win on Saturday.
Butler finished with 28 points, 10 rebounds, six assists and two blocks shots while Raheem Anderson poured in 20 points for the Eagles of Bangor (17-5, 13-3 NAC). Jacob Moore contributed 17 points and six rebounds while Willis added 12 points.
Ron Adrian scored a team-high 23 points for Johnson State (3-20, 3-13 NAC).
Lyndon State 51, MMA 48
At Lyndon Center, Vermont, George Carle’s 13-point, seven-rebound effort lifted the Hornets to a North Atlantic Conference win on Saturday.
Rontrez Purcell added 11 points and game-high eight rebounds along with three blocked shots for Lyndon State (9-14, 8-8 NAC)>
Tyler Gilson Gilson led Maine Maritime Academy of Castine (3-20, 2-14 NAC) with 14 points and seven rebounds, while Tyler Thayer added 10 points and six rebounds.
UM-Machias 107, NHTI 68
At Machias on Saturday, Brandon Blakely’s 21-point, seven-rebound effort sparked the Clippers to victory.
Ivory Sneed contributed 16 points and eight rebounds for the University of Maine-Machias. Jorge Milo (8 rebounds) and Tyler Rubin tallied 14 points each. Dreu Johnson handed out six assists.
Yordy Tavarez led New Hampshire Technical Institute with 17 points.
UMF 90, Castleton State 84
At Castleton, Vermont, the Beavers wiped out a 19-point, first-half deficit behind three 20-point scoring performances to gain a North Atlantic Conference victory on Saturday.
Uriah-Forest Bulley connected for a career-high 28 points on 8-of-10 floor shooting and 12-for-16 free throw accuracy. Nick Hilton followed with 26 points and nine rebounds and Eric Berry scored 20 points and dished out seven assists for the University of Maine-Farmington (8-15, 7-9 NAC).
Chad Copeland was a rebound shy of recording a double-double with 18 points and nine rebounds for Castleton State.
Women’s Basketball
Husson 67, Johnson State 42
At Johnson, Vermont, the Eagles limited the Badgers to 16 percent shooting in posting the NAC victory on Saturday.
Stephanie Comstock scored a game-best 16 points for Husson (14-8, 12-3 NAC) and Victoria McIntyre turned in a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds while Taylor Blood came off the bench to score 14 points.
Brittany Robertson scored 13 points to lead Johnson State (6-14, 6-8 NAC).
Castleton St. 70, UMF 57
At Castleton, Vermont, Bryanna DuPont netted a game-high 17 points and pulled down nine rebounds to carry seventh-ranked Castleton State to a North Atlantic Conference victory on Saturday.
Jade DeRoches scored 14 points for the Spartans (19-4, 15-1 NAC).
Meghan Smith recorded a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds to pace the University of Maine-Farmington (11-12, 10-6 NAC). Lindsay Ranquist scored 12 points and grabbed nine rebounds and Rhi Jackson provided 10 points.
Lyndon State 48, MMA 40
At Lyndon Center, Vermont, Allison Brown connected for 11 points to lead the Hornets to a North Atlantic Conference win on Saturday.
Aimee Thompson added eight points and seven rebounds for Castleton State (7-16, 6-10 NAC).
Mary Badeen (8 rebounds) and Maggie McConkey each popped in 12 points to lead Maine Maritime Academy of Castine (10-13, 7-9 NAC). Kristi Willey recorded 11 points, nine rebounds and four assists.
Pine Manor 81, UMFK 64
At Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, Pine Manor shot almost 50 percent from the field and placed five players in double figures to beat the University of Maine-Fort Kent.
Alexis Lee led the Gators (11-8) with 15 points, while Sybil Lynch and Erica Jones netted 14 points each. Shaquanda Middleton and Cadejia Matthews-Austin scored 11 and 10 points, respectively, and Nastasia Franklin grabbed 10 rebounds.
Ericka Saucier propelled the Bengals (13-7) with a game-high 24 points and 15 rebounds.
Softball
James Madison 4, Maine 0
At Jacksonville, Florida, on Sunday, Niki Prince hit an RBI double in the third inning and Megan Good added a solo homer in the fourth to help lift James Madison (3-2) by Maine (1-4).
EmJ Fogel and Rachel Carlson each had two hits for Maine. Molly Flowers took the loss after giving up 10 hits and three earned runs in 6 ⅓ innings while striking out four.
UMaine gets swept
At Jacksonville, Florida, Virginia Tech and James Madison each posted a victory over the University of Maine on Saturday.
The Hokies took the first game 4-2, then the Dukes blanked the Black Bears 2-0 in the second game.
Elizabeth Birle and Kelsey Mericka stroked RBI singles during a two-run second inning for Virginia Tech (8-0). Mericka also hit a two-run home run and Vanessa Gonzales singled twice.
Mikaela Allen pitched a two-hitter with eight strikeouts.
Erika Leonard blasted her first career home run for the Black Bears (1-3). Erin Bogdanovich allowed nine hits in taking the loss. Jessica Burk added a single.
In the second game, Jessica Mrozek and Morgan Tolle hit run-scoring singles in the fifth inning to lift James Madison (1-2) to the win. Megan Goode fired a one-hitter, striking out 14 and walking two.
Burk’s single was the only hit to support Alexis Bogdanovich, who took a no-hitter into the fifth and wound up allowing six hits with five strikeouts.
