BANGOR, Maine — A second-half explosion carried No. 1 Medomak Valley of Waldoboro to a 60-39 victory over No. 8 Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield Saturday evening in an Eastern Class B boys quarterfinal at the Cross Insurance Center.

Medomak Valley (17-2) plays No. 12 Mount Desert Island Wednesday at 8:35 p.m. in the semifinals. MDI advanced via a 57-53 upset over No. 4 Gardiner earlier Saturday.

MCI ends its season at 13-7.

Junior guard Nicholas DePatsy, son of Medomak Valley coach Nick DePatsy, almost single-handily beat MCI as he poured in 30 points to lead the Panthers. DePatsy made four of five 3-pointers and 12-of-17 free throws. For his impressive effort, DePatsy was selected the Darling’s/BDN Player of the Game.

“It was an overall team win tonight,” Nicholas DePatsy said. “We played good team defense and everybody played their role.”

Senior Colton Spear, junior Zach Starr and sophomore Cameron Allaire each added six points for the Panthers, while senior Micah Williamson added five.

For the Huskies, seniors Mitchell Hallee and Todor Imsir led the way with 13 and 11 points, respectively.

“Defensively, I thought we did a heck of a job,” coach DePatsy said. “We rebounded and boxed out. I thought it was an overall team effort. We took care of the basketball when we had to. Everything was clicking.”

The Panthers broke open what had been a fairly close game with an 11-0 run in the second half

“That’s the way we are,” coach DePatsy said. “We get those runs and that can be beneficial.”

MCI coach Josh Tardy credited the Panthers ability to control the offensive and defensive glass, and the team’s ability to wait for the right shot as the deciding factors in the game.

“They are a well-coached team,” he said. “They found a way to be patient and wait until the perimeter players were able to catch and shoot in rhythm. We were surprisingly bad defensively in the first half, which was uncharacteristic, but that happens on the big stage against a very good team.”
