BARING, Maine — Crews from several area fire departments were at a serious fire at Baring Gifts at Knock on Wood, a gift and year-round Christmas shop on U.S. Route 1.

The fire started shortly before 5 p.m., according to a Washington County emergency dispatcher.

The building was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived, Capt. Dale Purton of the Calais Fire Department said Monday evening. He said crews from seven or eight fire departments — including Calais, Meddybemps, Charlotte, Princeton and St. Stephen, New Brunswick — knocked the fire down within about an hour but were hindered by bitter cold, high winds and 2 feet of snow that wreaked havoc with their equipment.

Purton said the store was destroyed by the fire. Because of the extent of the damage, the state fire marshal’s office has been called in to help determine the fire’s origin and cause, he said.

One firefighter was taken to the hospital for observation after showing signs of possible overexertion, Purton said.

As of 8:30 p.m., fire crews remained at the fire scene and Route 1 remained closed to traffic.
