NEW LIMERICK, Maine — A multi-vehicle accident closed a southbound section of Interstate 95 in New Limerick for more than two hours on Thursday afternoon.
The crash took place about 12:30 p.m. at mile marker 298 in New Limerick.
According to Maine State Police Trooper Chuck Michaud, a vehicle went off the southbound side of the interstate and crashed, which led to two tractor-trailers crashing, and subsequently two more passenger vehicles crashed into the back of the tractor-trailers. A third-tractor trailer was able to navigate through most of the original crash scene but ended up crashing into two other passenger vehicles.
One person was taken to Houlton Regional Hospital with head, chest and knee injuries, which were not considered life-threatening. All other vehicle occupants refused medical treatment.
The southbound lanes of I-95 were shut down for about 1½ hours while vehicles and debris were cleared.
The names and ages of the individuals involved were not released.
In all, seven vehicles were involved in the crash — three tractor-trailers and four passenger vehicles. Some vehicles were significantly damaged. All four passenger vehicles and one tractor-trailer had to be towed.
The southbound section of I-95 was closed between Exit 291 and Exit 286, the Smyrna/Oakfield exit, and traffic was rerouted onto Route 2 in Houlton.
Whiteout weather conditions and vehicles following too closely contributed to the crash, according to authorities.
Michaud said state police urge motorists to reduce speed and increase following distances in bad weather conditions.
Trooper Adam Bell and Trooper Timmy Saucier are investigating the series of accidents.
