WATERVILLE, Maine — An apartment building on Paris Street was destroyed by fire on Monday morning, leaving nine adults and three children, ages 8 and 9, without a home, according to officials.
Firefighters were called to the 2½-story building about 10:15 a.m., according to Waterville firefighter Shawn Stetson.
Heavy fire was spewing from the second floor of the five-apartment building when crews arrived and smoke was everywhere, Stetson said. An excavator was brought in to take down an exterior wall so that fire crews could get better access to the fire.
No injuries were reported in connection with the fire, and all of the victims were being assisted by the Road Cross and Keystone Management, which owns the building.
About 40 firefighters from Waterville, Winslow and Fairfield battled the blaze, while Oakland and Albion provided coverage in Waterville.
The fire investigation was expected to continue into Monday evening, according to Waterville firefighter Shawn Stetson. A cause has not been determined.
