For the 15th year in a row, D.L. Geary’s Brewing Company out of Portland has picked a winner for its yearly competition to design their summer ale label and packaging. This year’s winner is R.J. Condon, a Cape Cod native attending MECA.

The competition is open to Maine College of Art students.

Condon’s winning design showcases that most iconic of Maine symbols: the lobster. It will be featured on six-pack and 12-pack containers of Geary’s summer ale, and on the label as well. Condon’s prize includes $5,000 — and having his artwork appear on over 1 million bottles of beer.

“The top two designs for us were actually both RJ’s, believe it or not,” said Kelly Geary Lucas, operations manager of Geary’s Brewing. “All of the entries were extremely well done — it was an exciting selection process this year. The winning design grabbed us because of its artistry and attention to detail.”

Condon will be graduating from MECA in 2017 and plans to stay in Portland.

“I moved to Portland because I want to be part of this city and continue to design,” said Condon. “MECA has amazing courses and professors and I plan to take full advantage of that.”
