WISCASSET, Maine — The Wiscasset School Committee voted 5-0 Thursday to hire Heather Wilmot as superintendent of schools. Wilmot will become Wiscasset’s first permanent superintendent since the town’s withdrawal from the Sheepscot Valley Regional School Unit.
Wilmot has agreed to a three-year contract with Wiscasset. She will start work July 1. She is the assistant superintendent of the Lisbon school system, a position she held for four years.
Wilmot is a graduate of the Newburyport High School in Newburyport, Massachusetts. She has a bachelor’s degree in education from St. Joseph’s College and a master’s degree and certificate of advanced studies from the University of New England. She expects to receive her doctorate in transformational leadership in August 2015. She lives in Brunswick with her husband, Noah.
School board Chairman Steve Smith presented Wilmot and her husband with a sweatshirt bearing a Wolverine, the Wiscasset High School mascot, after introducing them at Thursday’s meeting.
Interim Superintendent Lyford Beverage also announced Shelly Schmal has been hired as the school department’s finance manager. Schmal has served as administrative assistant at Wiscasset High School for nearly 25 years.
“We are really going to miss her,” Wiscasset High School Principal Cheri Towle said of Schmal.
