WINTER HAVEN, Florida — Righthander Drew Teller scattered nine hits over 6 ⅔ innings to lead the St. Bonaventure Bonnies to a 3-1 victory over the Maine Black Bears Friday.
Teller, a 6-foot-4 junior, allowed one run and struck out three. Nate Grant finished the seventh and then Thad Johnson pitched two scoreless innings for the Bonnies (2-0).
Scott Heath recorded three hits to lead Maine (1-7).
The Black Bears scored their run in the third when Brian Doran hit a leadoff single to right. He moved to second on Sam Balzano’s sacrifice bunt and to third on a wild pitch when Heath struck out. Doran then scored on Luke Morrill’s fielder’s choice grounder.
The Bonnies scored single runs in the fifth, sixth and ninth innings. Jonathan Diaz stroked an RBI double in the fifth and Tyler Bell added a run-scoring double in the sixth. Danny Urban tripled in the ninth and was plated on Johnson’s single.
Freshman righthander Justin Courtney turned in a solid outing for the Bears as he allowed two runs on four hits over 5 ⅔ innings. He struck out five and is now 0-3. Junior righthander Logan Fullmer finished up and allowed a run and three hits while striking out three.
Softball
Maine sweeps
At Clearwater, Florida, senior first baseman Nikki Byron belted a pair of homers and drove in three runs to lead the Black Bears past East Carolina 11-7. Earlier in the day, Maine rallied from a 2-0 deficit to beat Middle Tennessee State 5-2.
In the second game, Byron hit a solo homer in the second inning and a two-run blast in the third as Maine built a 6-3 lead.
Maine added a pair of runs in the fifth before East Carolina erupted for four in the top of the sixth to pull within 8-7.
But the Black Bears answered with three in the bottom of the sixth.
Freshman left fielder Erika Leonard had three singles and two RBIs and Felicia Lennon had a pair of base hits and an RBI for the Black Bears. Leadoff hitter Rachel Carson singled, walked twice and scored three times.
Freshman Molly Flowers picked up the win, allowing 12 hits and four earned runs through 5 ⅓ innings with three strikeouts and no walks. Annie Kennedy, also a freshman, notched the save by pitching 1 2/3 innings of five-hit, two-run ball.
Ciara Ervin had a pair of doubles and two singles for the Pirates. Kacie Oshiro had a double and two singles and Kerry Butler, Ali Ramirez and Meredith Mitchell had two hits apiece.
Men’s Basketball
Husson 78, Lyndon 66
At New London, New Hampshire, Aaron Willis scored 33 points and Husson advanced to its third straight North Atlantic Conference championship game .
Husson improves to 20-6 while Lyndon falls to 11-16.
Lyndon knotted it at 51, but the Eagles turned it up and went on a 13-4 run capped by two Eli Itkin free throws with 3:32 left that gave Husson a 64-55 lead with 3:32 remaining.
Raheem Anderson added 19 points for Husson and Trevon Butler added eight points and 10 rebounds.
David Johnson paced Lyndon with 17 points.
Women’s Basketball
NEC 63, Husson 48
At Castleton, Vermont, No. 3 New England College outscored No. 2 Husson 31-17 in the second half to earn the North Atlantic Conference semifinal victory.
Kayla Lawlor paced NEC (21-6, 14-5 NAC) with 22 points and Taylor Burgess added 10.
Chandler Guerrette sparked Husson with 16 points and six rebounds. Katy Brochu chipped in with 13 points and 12 rebounds.
NEC held Husson to a 25.9 percent (15 of 58) effort from the floor and outrebounded Husson 52-36.
Women’s Hockey
UConn 3, Maine 2
At Orono, the University of Connecticut scored on both its power-play opportunities and held on to take a 1-0 lead in their best-of-three Hockey East quarterfinal series at Alfond Arena.
The teams will play game two on Saturday at 4 p.m. and the if necessary game will be on Sunday at 4 p.m..
Maine has now lost seven in a row.
Sarah MacDonnell fired home a Caitlin Hewes rebound to stake UConn to a 1-0 lead in the second period and, in the third period, she fed an open Kayla Campero for another power-play goal.
Emilie Brigham swatted home an Audra Richards rebound to cut the deficit to 2-1 but Justin Fredette restored the two-goal cushion before Richards scored with the extra attacker with 1:13 remaining.
But Maine couldn’t get the equalizer.
Elaine Chuli made 26 saves for the 10-17-7 Huskies while 10-19-3 Maine received 32 stops from Meghann Treacy.
