FAIRFIELD, Maine — A 61-year-old Skowhegan man doused himself with gasoline and set himself on fire inside his car Saturday morning along Route 201, said Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland in a news release Saturday night.

William Wakefield informed a friend he was going to take his own life, McCausland said.

Passing motorists reported the fire just before 10 a.m. and police and firefighters went to the weigh station on Route 201 and found a 2000 Chevrolet Cavalier engulfed in flames with a deceased person inside, Fairfield police Sgt. Matthew Bard said.

Investigators from the state fire marshal’s office were at the scene Saturday, and the body was taken to the state medical examiner’s office, according to Bard.
