ROCKLAND, Maine — A 52-year-old St. Louis man was fined $750 Tuesday in a plea deal over a 1988 drunk driving case.

Richard B. Sant was fined after admitting to the lesser charge of driving to endanger. A related charge of operating under suspension was dismissed. His driver’s license also was suspended for 45 days.

Sant was arrested on July 9, 1988, after being stopped on Route 1 in Warren by then-Maine State Trooper John Cousins. The then-26-year-old had a blood-alcohol level of 0.17.

Sant failed to appear for his court hearing and the case remained active. An arrest warrant was issued and his right to drive in Maine was suspended.

There is a compact between states in which a license suspended in Maine can be suspended in the reciprocating state as well, but it was not clear what prompted Sant to resolve the case more than 25 years later.

His attorney Walter McKee said last year that Sant wanted to clear up the matter but did not specify what led to that decision.
